The natural organic crib mattress is always better. However, fabrics that are easily washable and clean easily are great with babies. Foam, cover, and any other material should be non-toxic and not contain any harmful chemicals. Synthetic materials like latex, rubber, etc. can cause rashes.

Water Resistance is a no-brainer! With small babies, accidents do happen. If the cover is not water-resistant, you will spoil it and bedding with stains and odors. Removing the cover and washing it easily is important

A parent can sleep easy only after making sure that the baby is safe. Look for certifications that guarantee non-toxicity, organic materials, etc. Safety standards set by different agencies are important.
Experts advise choosing the type of mattress filler depending on the age of the child. So, for newborns, the firmest mattresses will be the optimal choice – with a pack of coconut coir for example.

For children older than two years, you need to choose a softer mattress, with a supportive orthopedic effect. Mattresses from latex, polyurethane foam will cope with this task. You can also buy a spring mattress with an independent spring unit.

DIMENSIONS of THE MATTRESS:

The size of baby cots varies in a very wide range. It is not always easy to choose a suitable variant, but possible. Going to buy a mattress, take the crib measurements – not the outer edge, but on the inner perimeter. It is important that the size of the mattress matched the parameters of the crib: there should not be significant gaps between the edge of the mattress and the crotch edges around the perimeter, otherwise, there is a risk of pinching the limbs of the baby between them.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a mattress used in a full-size crib must be at least 27 1/4 inches x 51 1/4 inches. The thickness should not exceed 6 inches, to prevent the baby’s head from getting trapped between the mattress and the crib. The retail carton for the crib and the crib itself must contain a specific warning statement that notes these dimensions.

MATTRESS COVER:

A removable cover will greatly facilitate the task of caring for a newborn mattress. It is important that it was made of natural breathable fabrics.

MATTRESS PAD:

Waterproof mattress covers – real salvation of the mattress from children’s “accidents”. Removable products are easily removed and cleaned, while the mattress itself remains fresh and clean. There is one more function: if it seems to you, that the mattress purchased for a newborn is too firm, a mattress pad will help to make a bed more comfortable.

The American Academy of Pediatrics(APP) guidelines for Sleep Safety and SIDS Reduction, recommends that you put your baby to sleep on as firm a mattress as you feel comfortable. Also, given the likelihood of leaky diapers, look for a mattress that has a strong waterproof mattress cover. Another thing to look for in a mattress is small vent holes on the sides of the mattress. The holes will help ventilate the mattress and allow odors to escape out.

A study from the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas found high levels of chemical emissions from crib mattresses. The team of researchers used 20 mattress samples taken from 10 different manufacturers. They found that the foam padding in crib mattresses releases significant amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), potentially harmful chemicals also found in household items such as cleaners and scented sprays.

Due to the high flammability of polyurethane foam, certain mattresses contain fire retardants. There are some retardants such as PBDEs and PentaBDE that have been banned in Europe and California. A report by Environment California Research and Policy Center found that PBDEs might be especially harmful to babies.

Due to the presence of chemicals mentioned above in baby crib mattresses, more parents than ever before are looking at Eco-friendly crib mattress options.

When it comes to baby crib mattresses there are many Eco-friendly options. However, know that they are not all equal and you need to read the label carefully to ensure that all the materials used are Eco-friendly or organic. Also, expect to pay more for a good quality Eco-friendly baby crib mattress.

How to choose the best mattress for a baby also depends on the covers. The covers layered on the mattresses have to be durable and easy to clean. Nevertheless, the vinyl covers are a good selection to go for. They are less expensive and are multi-layered so that the mattresses do not get spoiled from baby foods. Besides, you can also check out the antimicrobial covered mattresses. These types of mattresses protect your baby from germs. Hence, it is advisable that you look out for an antimicrobial covered crib mattress.

How much should I spend on a baby mattress?

The budget should never be a constrain while buying a crib mattress for your baby. That is because it will hardly cost you above $150 even for the best mattresses at the stores. You can also spend more but the highly expensive mattresses will not give you any additional benefits than the less priced ones. All you need to do is carry a decent amount of budget in your hand so that you return home with a good mattress. Plus, you should have a look at various stores for any available discounts. This will give you an idea of the different price tags and quality of the crib mattresses.

Is foam or coil mattress better for the baby?

Innerspring coil crib mattresses have a number of advantages compared to foam crib mattresses. These include better weight distribution, better edge support, longer-lasting and more durable, more waterproofing and water-resistance, better temperature regulation for babies, and more breathability.

Is spring or foam mattress better for babies?

Foam mattresses are the cheapest sort of baby mattress but don’t hold their shape well. Sprung and pocket sprung mattresses are better at keeping their shape but more expensive. Natural fiber mattresses are good quality and stay in shape but are the priciest type.

Is a 2 stage crib mattress necessary?

One side of the mattress is firmer for younger infants and the other is softer for toddlers. Always consult with your pediatrician before deciding which side is appropriate for your child. There should be a tag at the end of the mattress to tell you which side is which.

I also went back and forth between many different mattresses. I ended up purchasing the Colgate Eco Classica III Dual Firmness Crib Mattress. My son is 3 now and is still using it in his toddler bed.

It has a firmer side for infants and a softer side for toddlers. I purchased a waterproof mattress protector because this mattress isn’t waterproof. He’s always slept really well on this mattress and I think it seems to be a high-quality mattress, although the price is a little high compared to some others.

Additionally, the cover is machine washable and the insert is completely washable in your tub or shower so there’s nowhere for mold, dirt, germs, dust mites, allergens, etc to hide inside.

Most importantly, and the aspect that tipped the scales to be way better than anything else I looked at, is that it’s mostly air itself which makes it super cool (reducing chance of overheating which is a rush factor for SIDS and I live in a really hot area) with lots of air circulation (again, SIDS prevention) and a baby can breathe through it even with their face planted straight down into it.

Obviously, we’ve still abided by all the safe sleep rules including putting our baby down on her back, but this really reduced my anxiety once she was able to roll herself over into her stomach.
